The Town of Ocho Rios, Saint Ann, Jamaica

Ocho Rios is a town in the Parish of Saint Ann where you can find all the flavor of Jamaica. This town has great offers for fabulous sightseeing, excellent shopping and a good look into the Jamaican culture. It was once a fishing village but now caters to tourists. It is a port of call for cruise ships as well as for cargo ships.

Short History of Ocho Rios

The name "Ocho Ríos" is a Spanish term which means "Eight Rivers". The town is located in the parish of Saint Ann on the north coast of Jamaica. Many believe that Christopher Columbus first set foot on the land in Ocho Rios, although he landed in many spots along the Jamaican coast.

And in honor of Christopher Columbus, a park was built on that exact place where he is believed to first set foot on. This park, named the Columbus Park, can be visited by travelers and residents just outside the city of Ocho Rios, where there are maritime artifacts and Spanish colonial buildings.

The town of Ocho Rios had been given an inaccurate name, since there are no eight rivers in the area. The most probable cause of the town being a misnomer is likely a British corruption of the original Spanish name "Las Chorreras" (translated as "the waterfalls"), which is a name given to the village because of the nearby Dunn's River Falls.

Things to Do in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Ocho Rios Jamaica offers many attractions to check out. The Parish of St. Ann is known as the "garden parish" because of its great beauty. Its parish capital is the market town of St. Ann's Bay. The resort development of this delightful parish, however, has centered round the town of Ocho Rios.

The first thing to check out is the famous Dunn's River Falls, one of Jamaica's most wonderful sights, as well as a national treasure.

Ocho Rios owes much of its fame to Dunn's River Falls, but this is not all that the town has to offer. The Coyaba River Garden and Museum is a small but nice place covering the history of Jamaica.

Another very beautiful attraction is Eden Falls at The Ruins restaurant.

Ocho Rios is also famous for Fern Gully, a rocky gorge of tremendous depth which zig-zags for about four miles from the coast up to the central mountain area of the island. Although it has become rather commercialized in recent years by souvenir vendors, it is still well worth a visit to see the profusion of tropical ferns (over 500 species) and the kind of foliage only to be found in a tropical rain forest. In the deepest parts of the gorge, only faint dapples of sunshine penetrate through the thick foliage and the temperature is about ten degrees cooler.

There are many things to do in Jamaica and activities that offer you a remarkable visit to Ocho Rios. You can have an exciting bobsled ride and zip lining tours within the rain forest of Mystic Mountain.

Ocho Rios also has a wonderful beach for you to enjoy. There is also a very nice small beach right at the foot of the harbor pier that offers good snorkeling, beverages and food.
